LAKE OF THE CLOUDS
One of my favorite places to visit in autumn in the Upper Peninsula is Lake of the Clouds. Located in the Porcupine Mountains, this is an easy, accessible hike for all… with some of the most majestic fall views you’ll find up here. If you have the luxury, I’d recommend visiting on a weekday, because the weekends can get very busy. But just take M-107, which dead-ends here. Just… magical. 🍂
An autumn waterfall trip
Looking to see some waterfalls this autumn? 🍁 Try this road-trip which takes you from Laughing Whitefish Falls to Tahquamenon Falls! Both are wonderful to visit in any season, but autumn is just… a little extra special. Both have observation decks and stairs to lead you to unique viewpoints, and are bursting with fall color and cascading water.
BIG BAY GETAWAY
A Big Bay getaway is an essential fall day trip in the U.P. Grab breakfast at the Hungry Hollow Cafe, check out the Big Bay Lighthouse (or stay overnight!), take a stroll at Squaw Beach, check out the history of Anatomy of a Murder at the Thunder Bay Inn and have a drink at the crime scene itself — Lumberjack Tavern! And be sure to hit Thomas Rock and Yellow Dog Falls! 🌲
Autumn is HERE, guys. 🍂 Trying to at least hit my usual haunts this year again… which include a few trips out to Big Bay, which is just… a town I have such a special place in my heart for. I spent a long time reading outside drinking a chaider (chai/cider!), before making the drive out there, grabbing a bite at Thunder Bay Inn, and heading down to the beach to take a quick peek, and ended up just staying there for golden hour, because it was legit so beautiful, warm, breezy, and just… magical.
